Maritime Navigation Workshop
Learn traditional celestial navigation and lighthouse identification techniques used by sailors before GPS technology. Hands-on sessions with sextants, charts, and historic lighthouse records from Atlantic archives. Workshop covers sight reduction calculations, dead reckoning, and interpretation of lighthouse characteristics from nautical publications. Eight-hour intensive format includes practical exercises at coastal observation points.
Lighthouse Photography Expedition
Join professional photographers for dawn and dusk sessions capturing the dramatic interplay of light, architecture, and Atlantic seascapes. Includes technique instruction covering long exposure, composition, and weather-responsive shooting strategies. Exclusive access to restricted lighthouse grounds and interior vantage points. All skill levels welcome. Equipment recommendations provided, but professional gear not required.
Keeper Genealogy Research
Trace your family connection to lighthouse keeping families through our archival research service. We access government records, keeper journals, and historic documents to build comprehensive genealogical reports. Research covers employment records, station assignments, family details, and connections to maritime incidents. Deliverable includes documented family tree, scanned primary sources, and contextual historical narrative.
Preservation Volunteer Program
Contribute directly to lighthouse conservation through weekend volunteer sessions. Work alongside heritage specialists on restoration projects including painting, grounds maintenance, and artifact cataloging. Learn traditional building techniques while supporting active preservation. Projects rotate seasonally based on weather conditions and maintenance priorities. Safety training, tools, and lunch provided. Minimum age 16.
Educational Seminar Series
Attend our quarterly lecture series featuring maritime historians, archaeologists, and former lighthouse keepers. Topics cover shipwreck archaeology, Fresnel lens optics, coastal ecology, and Atlantic trade routes. Each session combines presentation, artifact examination, and discussion. Series pass includes four seminars plus access to members-only archive viewing sessions. Individual seminars available separately.
